Content types

Pages and Posts are built in. If your site needs something more structured, such as Projects with a client and a year, or Team members with a photo and a job title, create a content type for it under Content → Content types → New content type (Administrators only).

  • Name (singular) and Plural name: such as Project and Projects.
  • Key: used in admin and API addresses. It can’t be changed later.
  • Each item has its own page, with a listing at an address you choose (such as /projects, so items appear at /projects/item-name).
  • No pages of their own: for things shown through other pages, such as team members on an About page.

Options:

Add fields with Add field. Each has a Label, a Kind, optional Help text, and can be Required to publish.

Kind For
Short text A name, a job title.
Long text Plain paragraphs.
Formatted text Text with bold, italic, and links.
Number Prices, years. Can be limited to whole numbers.
Yes / no A checkbox.
Date Event dates, deadlines.
Link A web address.
Choice from a list One of a set of options you write.
Choose several from a list Any number of options you write, such as the languages someone speaks. Lists can show only items with a given choice.
Image or file From the media library (images only, or any file).
Link to other content Points to other items, such as Related projects. Can allow several.
List of entries A repeating group of sub-fields, such as a list of speakers, each with a name and a photo.

Every type with its own pages also gets the built-in Visibility settings and Members only. You don’t add these; see Pages and posts.

Once a type has items, its addresses and content area are locked, and each field’s kind and key can’t change, because items already store values for them. You can still rename labels, change help text, and add fields. A type can only be deleted when it has no items, including in the Trash.

How items of a custom type look is set by the Other content types template under Design.
