Saving, previewing, and publishing
Visitors only ever see the published version of a page. Everything else (drafts, saved changes, previews) is private until you publish.
Saving
Section titled “Saving”Save draft saves a new numbered revision. Saving a page that’s already live doesn’t change what visitors see: the status becomes Published · unpublished changes until you publish again.
You can’t lose work by accident:
- The editor backs up unsaved changes a few seconds after you stop typing. If you come back later, it offers Restore them or Discard.
- The browser warns you before leaving with unsaved changes.
Previewing
Section titled “Previewing”Preview saves, then opens the page as visitors would see it, in a new tab. The preview link works for one hour, and anyone who has it can view that version, so you can send it to a colleague for a quick look.
Publishing
Section titled “Publishing”Publish (or Publish changes) makes the current version live. Visitors switch from the old version to the new one in one step and never see a half-updated page.
Before publishing, sc-cms checks a few things:
- Must fix: a missing title, empty required fields, or a parent page that isn’t published yet.
- Worth a look: images without alt text, a missing or overlong search description, and links to pages that aren’t published. You can Publish anyway or Go back and fix. Your admin can turn these warnings on or off.
- For your information: if the address changes, the old address will redirect to the new one.
If you aren’t allowed to publish, or your site requires a review, you’ll see Submit for review instead. See Reviews and comments.
Scheduling
Section titled “Scheduling”Under Publish later, pick a date and time and choose Schedule. The item goes live within a minute of that time. Cancel schedule undoes it.
If the server was down at the scheduled time, the item is published as soon as it’s back. A scheduled publish that fails is reported on the dashboard.
Taking content offline later
Section titled “Taking content offline later”For things that should come down by themselves, such as an offer that ends Friday or an event page, use Take offline later. Pick a date and time, then choose Schedule. The page is unpublished within a minute of that time and kept as a draft. Cancel undoes it.
The page has to be live first, or scheduled to publish before then, so “publish Monday, take down Friday” works. Upcoming take-downs are listed on the dashboard under Scheduled.
Taking content offline
Section titled “Taking content offline”- Unpublish removes the page from the site but keeps it as a draft.
- Move to trash unpublishes it and moves it to the Trash, where it can be restored.
